Who is the Key Person?

“The key person is responsible for working with a small group of children, providing them with a sense of security, care and building a relationship with their parents”

The four pillars of preschool education and the related tasks of the Key Person

1. Each child is unique

The key person makes every child feel important, because their needs and feelings are taken care of by a specific person.

2. Building positive relationships

A key person:

• Is responsible for working with a small group of children,
• Creates positive relationships with children and their parents / guardians,
• Develops a close bond with children, thus ensuring a sense of stability,
• Helps children feel safe, comfortable and confident in kindergarten,
• Supports children in the process of acclimatization in kindergarten,
• Meets parents / guardians before or when the child starts preschool education,
• Organizes meetings before the child starts preschool education, and then periodic meetings,
• Is the first point of contact for parents
• Communicates with parents / guardians directly or via diaries,
• Schedules time to work with parents / guardians.

3. Create an environment that supports the development of the child

• The key guardian builds a bond with the child based on trust and partnerships with parents / guardians,
• All caregivers are sensitive, closely observe the children and respond to their needs,
• All tutors have time to regularly reflect and revise their pedagogical activities,
• The tutors are supported by the director and regularly receive a substantive opinion about their work.

4. Adequate teaching and continuous development

A key person:

• Performs regular observations of children and analyses the information obtained,
• Contributes to the observations made by other carers,
• Plans teaching based on the observation of the interests and needs of children,
• Realises the child’s needs by responding to his feelings and behaviours,
• Works on the development of the child’s linguistic, social, physical and intellectual abilities,
• Records progress and shares insights with parents / guardians and professionals
• Creates and co-creates individual teaching plans,
• Organizes a smooth transition of the child to the next age group or another kindergarten / school.
